Talk Lady needs some networking help. :)

Hope that title draws some attention here.

Anyways heres the stats.

Two computers:

Laptop PC running XP Pro Mobile Nic integrated
PC Puter running 2kpro Linksys 10/100 nic card installed.

Ruled out bad nic cards. Both computers will directly connect to cable broadband without router.

Can connect one computer through router but can not connect second one.

I know i have been able to connect up to 3 computers via this same router and for the life of me I can't get the second one to connect to internet.

Right now current config.

Laptop connected via router access to net great (well as best you can say for comcrap. )

PC comptuer connected via router but NO connection to net.

Reading stats on ipconfig on second computer heres what it states.

Ipconfig /all

Host name: Office
Primary DNS Suffix: Blank
Node Type: Broadcast
Ip Routing Enabled: No
WINS Proxy Enabled: No

Ethernet adapter local area connection:

Media state: cable disconnected
Description: Linksys LNE100TX(v5) Fast Ethernet Adapater #2
Phyical Address: bunch o numbers

Two odd things I see with those states. Media state and also the fact that it says Adapter #2.

I have reinstalled drivers for that adapter and it keeps showing up as #2 (like if i have two installed. I do not have two installed. Only one.

Even tried using the stupid cd that comcrap provides to set up second pc's and it told me that I was sucessful at setting it up. ya right. It ain't a working.

If you need additional Information say so please.

Any ideas would be most grateful.

Neo

Do both use DHCP, Neo? What IP's does it give? Might be worth setting manual IP's and DNS info to see if it connects that way, of possible.

Sounds like it could be router config problem. Not my forte, but someone lese will help no doubt. What model/brand router?

Cheers
Mick

My first thought? Boot to safe mode, remove all network cards. Reboot, let Windows autodetect the network card, then supply the required drivers as prompted.

Yes im leaning its a router/config prob. because im trying to connect to the router via that 192.168.1.1 number and its not doing anything.

so i'll try what rob says. boot safe mode and try that.

i'll post back in a few.

Actually I doubt it's a NIC error if it connects directly to the cable fine. More likely router prob. Maybe you have to define the gateway?

Cheers

What the heck are these other things under the Network Adapters?

Direct Parallel
Wan Miniport (IP)
Wan Miniport (L2TP)
Wan Miniport (PPTP)

It won't let me uninstall all of these. Keeps giving me a message of:

Failed to uninstall the device. The device may be required to boot up the computer.

Edit: uh, there was only one Linksys nic card in there, uninstalled that. it had a #2 in there as well. Should be as I only have one nic card installed. No onboard.

You can leave those alone. Just remove the offending NIC and any similar entries (#1, #2, etc.)

The reason I suggested removing the NIC was to force a reset of all connection settings.

BTW, are you using DHCP?

They are all ways of networking. Yiour ISP setup disk probably isntalled them. But they should not interefere with TCP/IP.

Does router have DHCP and DDNS enabled? What IP's does it give either lappie or PC?

Can you ping the other comp from the one with no net?

Cheers

DHCP is what im using.

I removed the offending nic card as you suggested Rob, windows asked for the disk to install the drivers and I did and it again showed up as Adapter #2

uh how would i ping the other computer from lappie to pc with no net?

It was so simple in the past. just connect them and away I go. So not sure why its this way now. Only thing different from long time ago was that it used to be attbi and now its comcrap.
