winxp win98 network setup not working

I had a (1) win98 se desktop setup with another (2) win98 se desktop with a Belkin 4 port dsl router. It worked fine for internet and file sharing.

I added a winxp laptop and it set itself up.
All worked fine for internet and file sharing.

Then, I crashed the primary win98 se computer and replaced it with a winxp desktop. I removed (2) win98 se. Now I have winxp desktop, win98 se desktop and winxp laptop attached to my router. The winxp computers set themselves up, so I can only guess that they are set up properly. All 3 can access the internet, but do not recognize each other for file sharing.

Any suggestions? I am at a total loss.

Bobbie

Welcome to TechIMO!!

Does each machine have a unique IP address?

Start > Run > cmd > ok > ipconfig > enter

ip config

Thanks for replying. I have the following settings showing up in ipconfig:

desktop xp 192.168.2.14
laptop 192.168.2.38
desktop 98 192.168.0.1

I assume you are saying they should probably be the same.

How do I change them if that is the case?

I'm surprised teh Internet is workign because the 98 desktop doesn't seem to have an IP address in the same subnet as teh others. What is the subnet mask on each one?

If you have enabled XP's firewall or added any other firewall then that may also be stopping your LAN sharing. Do you have any software firewalls installed?

For the desktop XP release and renew your IP address.

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

and post back what address you get.

For the 98 machine I believe the commands are:

ipconfig /release_all

and

ipconfig renew_all

The desktop 98 192.168.0.1 address (with a /24 subnet mask) is not compatible with the other two you mentioned.

You can manually assign it's IP address (and mask), Default Gateway, and DNS address. All should be identical to either XP machine except the last set of numbers in the actual IP address; that part must be different. To find teh DNS and default gateway settings, on an XP machine open a command prompt and type ipconfig /all

Side note: On the Win98 machine, run WINIPCFG to view these settings and relaease/renew an address.

DVNT1 is the guru here.

Follow his advice.

I'll watch and learn.
