Sony DRU500a wont burn cd-r at 24x? WHY?

I have a Sony DRU-500A dvd burner with updated firmware. (2.0H) and Roxio Easy Cd DVD Creator will only let me burn CDs up to 12x, when it supports 24, and im Using Memorex 48x media.

what gives?

It's a maximum transfer rate and applies to the outer edges of the disk, due to constant angular rotation speeds.

I have that same drive and it's a lousy drive. At the time it was one of the most popular drives on the market. i regretted i followed the crowd and bought it.

I have the same drive except with firmware 2.0f. I have no problem doing a 24x burn but I use Nero. Maybe the problem is with Roxio.

You can get a 30 day free trial of Nero. Perhaps you can download it and see if you still have the problem.

thegladiatorgy what kind of problems did you have with the drive?

Per Xaotic's note, Roxio reports actual burning rate, not the somewhat mis-leading factory #X spec.

Having said that, you might want to try downloading the lastest Roxio updates and then redoing the Roxio system tests suite and see if the #X spec listed for the drive increases.
