I've been able to connect to internet only about 1/2 the time lately (I get the "cannot detect dialtone" error msg) and been told I need a new modem. I have a 366MHz emachine with Windows 98. Is it a big deal to replace a modem? I'm guessing I can just pick one up at CompUSA???

Replacing a modem is a fairly straight forward process.

When you buy, look on the box for the system requirements and verify that it will work on your machine.

To install remove your current modem in Device Manager, shut down, remove old modem, install new modem, and re-boot.

98 will either automatically install the new modem or you may have to use the software that comes in the box to install the drivers.

just make sure to touch the computer case just in case you have a little static before you pick up the modem
