I have just linked my pc's using a hub and ethernet cards, both computers are sharing files.
My internet connection is a wireless one from my main pc to a cable modem (set top box).

The only problem I have is that the secondary pc can't access the internet, is that because the hub is not connected to the cable modem?

You should get a router instead of a hub so that it can assign IP addresses. Yes your modem needs to connected to your router to allow both pcs to connect to the internet. The router will have a wan port to connect to the modem.

yes (but you would need two IP addresses from your ISP that way)

...you could just put a wireless card in the 2nd PC

...or you could enable ICS (or another form of Internet Connection Sharing) on the main PC

you wouldn't need 2 ip addresses if you used a router. only for the hub.
