Very long boot up

just this morning when i boot up my laptop, windows 2000 took sooooo long to load. i mean more or less 10 minutes. and i know very well that this is not the normal boot time. when it finally finished loading, the programs would take long to load also. and the cpu usage was almost fixed at 100%.

thinking that it was a virus, i boot into safe mode with networking and did the online scanning using trend. i also did ad-aware scanning. downloaded regcleaner and did a registry cleanup. all this in safe mode and the system runs at normal speed. no viruses or trojans detected.

the last thing i remember doing was installing Mozilla 1.6 and thunderbird. and no other stuffs. every activity before the installation was fine. i already uninstalled so many things but still
when i restart the computer, it still takes a lot of time to boot. what areas should I check further. what settings? should i reformat the drive?

my laptop specs:

p2 366
win2k sp4
128mb memory
6 gb hdd (1.9gb free)

try running msconfig..............its possible...........and very likely that mozilla and fb have set themselves to run at startup........if you see any apps in config that u are SURE u don't need at startup disable them.........if u are not sure leave them alone

if all else fails uninstall an reinstall mozilla and fb apps see if it helps

bill,

i have done a defrag last sunday. and also i have thoroughly scandisk'd the drive. nothing was found.

doddsy,

i have uninstalled mozilla and it seems the problem still persists. the loading of the profile after the password is entered would take 5 mins or more compared before..

one thing i noticed also was that during the loading of the profile, the hdd led inicator blinks for a second or two then out for another 2 seconds, this repeats during the whole duration of the profile loading.. not compared before that i get a long hdd led indicator turned on once the profile is being loaded..

need help..

5 minutes at startup, seems a bit excessive.

Have you tried running ms config...........Start-run-type"msconfig" without the quotes-ok then click yor start up tababd look for any references to mozilla or firebird in the list of apps. if thereare references to these uncheck them

or a system restore............start-programs-accessories-system tools-system restore

then check the box that says restore my computer to an earlier time. when the monthly calendar is shown you will see restore point days shown in bold type. simply pick a date when everything was working properlyand click next.

if you are unsure of what to look for in msconfig then restore is a little safer,

How long has it been since the OS was loaded? Maybe it's just time for a freash install.
