Sony DDU1621 slow when ripping

Hi,

My DVD drive is a Sony DDU1621. It's rated for 40x max CD speed, but when I try and rip songs from a CD, it rips at around 2x, average. What would be making it rip so slowly? Anyone have this drive or experience with it?

What program are you using to rip? How about a few details on your system?

I'm using cdda2wav 2.00.3. I have an Athlon 2400+ and 512 MB RAM. I would think it would be able to at least do better than 2x speed.

Is the CD "copy protected"? If so, then it has deliberate, factory-preinstalled defects in the track data. This makes the ripping process slow, since the drive has to fight hard, use error correction math, read sectors multiple times et al, to get data off the disk that somehow resembles what should have been there.

Now ask yourself what happens if such a CD gets scratched during its lifetime. These discs are factory prescratched, at the edge of being unplayable when new.
