Did you install a DVD player program like PowerDVD?

Hmm... I'm not much of a DVD player guy but I do know that the software has to be installed to get the codec. It sounds like you did that already. Others are going to want to know more information about your setup.

What version of windows?

Does the dvd drive play cds?

Does the drive show up in My Computer?

Are there any conflicts in device manager?

InterActual is the free player provided on most commercial DVDs. That should be all you need, since it serves as a software decoder.

I also found this:

Do you have DirectX 8.1 installed?

It might be just as simple to obtain a hardware decoder Creative do some nice ones quite cheap now.

InterActual (the software that comes with a lot of DVD's) DOES NOT COME WITH A DECODER .!!!

I think (of what I know) it uses an existing Decoder already installed in the system!

Try to download a Trial version of PowerDVD or WinDVD and check if that solves your problem.

But your Sony DVD-Player must have had come with software! (or was it a bare-bone?? (no cds?)
