Kids Windows 98 and a corrupted dll

Hey all,

My Dad has a Windows 98 system that this morning when he booted up comes up with a error.

Windows boots ok, seemingly, then once the desktop loads explorer errors out saying there is an error in the winpmpi.dll file.
You can close that error box and explorer restarts and you get the same message, over and over. On restart the same thing happens.

Anyone have any ideas on this file? I googled and got no matches, talk about scary! The day Google failed me Search on Techimo here leads to the same, no matches. Anyone ever heard of this file?

I just searched my 98 machine and I don't have it.

Sounds like it may be specific to a installed or uninstalled program.

Can you boot into safe mode?

Bill

Run a search on google, there are websites that have hundreds of free dll files for download. Try these.
http://www.dll-files.com/
http://pacosdrivers.com/dll.asp
http://www.topqualityfreeware.com/dllindex.shtml

OK, I searched all over and I didn't find it either and it's not on my machine. I also ran searches using Alta Vista, Lycos, Ask.com and others, all of them came up empty.

Thanks guys for the help, I could boot into safe mode and renamed the file, machine booted ok then.

Not sure where that file came from, but I found my Dad's machine had more spyware than any machine I have ever seen It took me about an hour and half of Spybot and Adaware scanning and rebooting to get his machine clean. Seems to be running like a charm now.

I should have taken some screen shots of his machine, it was the perfect "Here is what your computer should NOT look like"
