append a log to a document using Notepad

I am trying to set up a document in Notepad where evertime I enter text the date is automatically inserted,

To append a log to a document

1.On the first line of a Notepad document, type the following extension at the left margin, making sure you use all uppercase letters and include the period:
.LOG

On the File menu, click Save.
Note

Every time you open this document, Notepad will append the current time and date to the end of the document, as specified by your computer's clock.

When I try to save the file to my desktop another window opens requesting to save the document into MY documents?

Found the problem,
When the save menu poped up I entered "test" in front of "*.txt". Once I removed the "*" I was able to save the file.
