getting disconnected...oh god please help

I am a customer of Wide Open Wests cable service, and we are consistently being dropped from the connection about every 5 minutes. The disconnection only lasts for about 1 second, but it is enough to get me kicked off my Steam server or disconnected from AIM. A technician from our ISP came to check it out. He thought he found the problem and switched one of the cables. However, this did not fix a thing. We are still getting dropped. Could it be a problem with our modem? The weird thing is, this just started about 2 weeks ago, so its not like we have had incorrect hardware or settings from the beginning. Does anyone have an idea of what might be causing this?

you need to contact the cable company pronto. if you are losing the connection every 5-10 minutes, you should be able to demonstrate this to them pretty conclusively. it might be the cablemodem, it might be the cable, it could be a lot of things...make the call.

if you have a second computer, try connecting that to the cablemodem instead (to eliminate the possibility that it is the nic or windows-related on pc #1). and try a different ethernet cable while you're at it...

do you have splitters on the coax?? If so how many and how many times does it split off of that... If it does you may need to get a signal repeater/booster. I can't remember the name just that a friend of mine had the same problem. Good luck... Also does anyone else in your area have similar issues. If not it sounds like internal wiring to me... has the signal been tested??
