missing status bar windows explorer

I can't find how to activate the status bar at the bottom of windows explorer and there isn't an option in the view command when you right click on the window. I am using windows xp. Have tried the net but all say to use the status bar option fom the view command except that it is missing. Any help greatly appreciated.
there is no problem with IE6
Thanks

Welcome to the forum!

Are you saying that there isnt a "status" option when u click on "view" in windows explorer?

----------------------------------

maybe this is related

-------------------------------

See if this does it

Open one IE window. Click on the 'View' menu; then click 'Status Bar'.

Now hold down the Ctrl key while clicking the X (close) button in the top right hand corner to close the window.

Open 'My Computer' and select from the 'View' menu; 'Status Bar'.

Finally, click on the 'Tools' menu, and go to 'Folder Options' and select the 'View' tab.

Click on the box named 'Apply to all folders'. After this is done, close Windows Explorer.

Now start regedit (Click on the 'Start' menu, click 'Run' and type in 'regedit' without the ''s).

Go to HKey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

Left-click on "Show_StatusBar".

Click on the 'Edit' menu and click on 'Permissions...'.

Click 'Advanced' find your user name in the list & click 'edit' button put a check next to 'Set value' under 'Deny'.

or maybe this
-----

1) With (only one) IE open, click View, select: Status Bar
2) Right-click on IE's Toolbar and select: "Lock the Toolbars"
3) Hold down the Ctrl key and click the close button (upper right)
4) Right click on the Start Button to open Windows Explorer, click View, select: Status Bar
5) Right-click on Explorer's Toolbar and select: "Lock the Toolbar"
6) Click Tools | Folder Options | View tab
7) Click the "Apply to all folders" button. (Click OK if this gives you another dialogue question)
8) Hold down the Ctrl key and click the close button (upper right)
9) Reopen IE to any page, right-click on a link and select: "Open in New Window" The Status Bar should remain visible.
10)Click on the Start Button, select RUN, and type REGEDIT

11) Verify that these Registry entries exist:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
"Show_StatusBar"="yes"
"Show_URLinStatusBar"="yes"

select "Show_StatusBar"
go to 'Permissions...' from Edit menu
click 'Advanced'
find your user name in the list & click 'edit' button
put a check next to 'Set value' under 'Deny'
OK, OK, OK, OK.

what about having it on permanently? The bars usually never stay on for me. I always end up reclicking on the View>Status bar menu item to get them back. It never did this on 2000, but does it all the time on xp. How do I fix this?
