Network XP and Red hat...

Hi

I want to connect my XP home computer with my red hat linux 9.0 computer. I have a crossover cable and ethernet ports on each. I'm not too sure how to do this. Basically - my XP home computer has a dsl internet connection with a static ip, and I want to network my linux comp. so that it can share this connection - so I can run my linux box as a server...

EDIT: Actually I haven't installed red hat yet - but I'm thinking maybe I should go with freebsd instead..?

this is just my opinion but I feel the best way to share a internet connection is by useing a router on the modem if at all possible useing the rj45 connectors.

it can be done without the router but is not the prefered way to do it, routers are fairly cheep now-a-days. and will give you a hardware firewall that will make your network invisable to the internet.

hmm...okay...it depends where you are. I'm in UK, and I haven't bought a router before and I don't know much about them. Is there a way to do it without a router? I have a dsl modem, ethernet and crossover cable. If it's too much hassle without a router let me know.

You can do it with 2 NIC cards.
You can set up ICS on the XP box and have it go DSL -> XP -> RH
or set up packet forwarding on linux and go DSL -> RH -> XP
But one machine will need 2 NIC's

I'm in UK...and routers don't cost $20 - they cost like I think £80+ for good ones? What software do I need to run once I have them connected? Samba?

Software to do what?
Samba will allow you to share files between your linux box (samba server) and your windows machine (client).

If you want to set up ICS on the XP box that is simple enough, check the box.
If you want to set up packet forwarding in linux give this PET A look
