Error Message

I was wondering if anyone could help me with a little prob that I ran into? I have a friends comp that he wanted me to clean up and get rid of all the spy ware and crap off. After cleaning up his comp I was going to do a defrag. All is well until this point. After the defrag it said something to the effect that memory to low for windows. It shuts down and starts to reboot. It comes up with and error that says error loading user exe. you have to reinstall windows. Ok now I go to web and find this error on microsoft and tells me how to extract the file it seems to be missing. Well this will not work. I type the exact command and it says to type and it says file not found. I am dealing with win 98se. I am suppose to be working off of the boot disk and 98 cd and I hav all that but cant get that command to work for me.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Have you tried running System File Checker?..it should find that User.exe is corrupt or missing and allow you to replace it. You will need your Win98se setup CD.

To use System File Checker, go to Start > Run and type sfc in the window and click OK..let it run thru and find/replace any files it needs to.

SFC has two options..let the utility scan for and find the file (missing or corrupt) or..put the bullet in the hole to extract one file from the install disk. I either case...sometimes you must brows to where the file is at on the CD. SFC is good, but not good enough to locate the needed files sometimes. There have been a few times I had to actually go browse the whole dam CD in Windows Explorer, find the location of the file..make some notes for the path to where it was at...browse SFC to that exact place..and...whala!! SFC says "here it is!!". %#$!@.
