boot problem installing new WD drive

I am running Win 98 FE and just bought a WD 160 GB drive ($59 at office max). I installed it according to the instructions.

My 40GB Maxtor was the master and the WD was the slave. The WD drive formatted, partitioned and copied over files fine.

The problem is, when I remove the Maxtor drive and switch the jumper on the WD to master, the computer will not boot.

Not sure what the problem is. All copies from the Maxtor drive were copied to the new WD drive.

Any thoughts?

either the jumper is wrong or its just taking a long time looking for the other drive if you left theother drive turned on in the bios etc.

Does it have a jumper setting for "single"?? Or you could just try the jumper on "cable select"

and go in the bios and turn off the other drive so it wont be looking for it....sometimes the bios has an option to hit f3 and it will look for the drives etc

Are you saying you copied the files or you "imaged" the drive?

I have the jumper set at master and there is only one drive on the cable. Is that a problem?

There is a cable select setting.

Thanks, John.

Bill, the installation software did the copying, so I'm not sure if that is an image or a copy. It was a partition to partition copy.

You need to set the jumper to the default setting. WD's won't boot if they're by themselves and the jumper is set to Master. Either put it in the default as-shipped setting or remove it. It should boot then.

Is the problem that your computer won't turn on, OR that it will not load the operating system?

you might need to do an "fdisk /mbr" from a windows boot disk

tried the "fdisk /mbr" but it would not let me do it.

I'll try changing the jumper. Hope that is not it. I will sure feel dumb!

Thanks
