DOS restart?

I have windows xp home and pro on two different computers. In Xp how do you restart in DOS mode? there isn't a selection on the shutdown menu like win 9x.

thanks

AFAIK, XP doesn't have "dos."

Bill

EDIT: Forgot to add "as a boot option."

Dos is a redundant feature in XP. There is no DOS mode, unless you had DOS installed before you installed XP.

The only version of DOS you have access to is the Command Prompt...

it doesnt really have a dos mode....the closest it has is "safe mode with command prompt" but what you will find is that it is just safemode with a command prompt window opened.

of course it DOES have the "recovery console" which is vaguely like DOS but it has some different commands and limitations.

To use it you boot off the cd and choose "r" for recovery console. Also if you like you can INSTALL the recovery console so that it shows up on the boot menu.

The true value of the recovery console is that you can boot to the cd and do recovery console even when the comp wont boot to safe mode.

yeah, sort of......suppose something goes terribly wrong?
e.g. bad virus etc, and you need to format and start again.
I normally use a windows start up disk, format and then reinstall the os.........what do I do now I have xp home?

Boot off the CD, and you can format the disk during the setup process - much easier than using a startup disk! (IMO)
