arctic silver on chipset is ok?

Hi,
I just got a new motherboard and when taking ther motherboard out of the box, the northbridge chipset cooler (heatsink) actually fell out. I noticed that it was taped/a thermal pad (transparent) was on the chipset that was supposed to "glue" the heatsink down. Well, I decided to take matters into my own hands, i removed the sticky clear tape of the northbridge controller and put on Actic Silver 3 on the chipset. Then I had an extra chipset cooler to put on, (the one where it mounts with these plastic/spring thingys when the predrilled holes around the chipset).
My main question is, Is it ok to use Arctic Silver 3 on my northbridge chipset? Will it "eat" away the plastic that the chipset is made of or damage it?

(This motherboard was the combo via c3/mb combo that i posted in the deals section)

Thank you very much, I appecriate it
-Paul
p.s, happy valentines day

It'll be just fine. I did this to my A7V board northbridge about a year and a half ago. It came with a heatsync only. I Arctic Silvered a Blue Orb using 50/50 epoxy and paste so that I could remove the Orb if it malfunctioned at any time. Just pop it into the freezer for about 20 minutes and the unit should be easily pulled off without taking the chipset with it.

Cheers!

thanks, so I'll need to put a very thin layer of Arctic Silver 3? (AS3) Right now, I put enough AS3 to cover make a circle blob in the center of the chip set. so, you think we'll need a thin layer of AS3 on the whole chipset?
thanks again -paul

Which ever surface is the smaller one, a thin, almost translucent application. I use a credit card to apply A/S. Basically, you're only filling in the imperfections of the heatsync to chipset mating. Most of the imperfections will be found in the milling of the heatsync.

Cheers!

this is what i do . put a LITTLE dab in the center . put your finger in a plastic sandwich bag and kinda puch your finger into it so it is very tight on your finger with no creases . or use cling wrap the same way . and spread it VERY THIN over the whole chipset . VERY thin is the key . almost see thru is perfect . you have to remember that it is only there to bridge the little gaps in the surface . and all the extra will just get puched out from under and sit on the edge of the chipset/die , same rules apply for cpus thats why i say die also . so you want it very thin so as little as possible can be puched out . you have to remember what it is there for , it transfers heat . so if you have a bead on the edge of the chipset it will pull the heat to it but have noplace to get rid of it . see what i am mean ?now once you have it spread VERY THIN take a straight razor , only is you got a steady hand , or a cc or a STRAIGHT edge , a clean straight edge is the key so you get no high spots when you "spackle it " , of some type and pull it over the top of the chipset/die in one smooth stroke , not stoping till you go from one edge to the other . this will leave an nice even thin coat . just think of how you fix holes in a wall with spackle , your doing the same thing .
what i also like to do if take some of the excess paste and dab it on the bottom of the heatsink and with a clean lint free , or as lint free as you have , "ghost " the bottom of the heatsink . meaning wipe it on the heasink and wipe it off so it just shows a stain in an area largeanuff to cover the whole chipset/die . then install the heatsink .

dat help any ?
anybody disagree on my method ?
class dismissed , pop quiz on wensday

< edit > dang it beemer i was typing all dat out and you beat me to the punch .
