OK.. quick solution.. usually works for this error..
(1) Grab your XP CD, and boot to it (you may have to adjust BIOS boot order)
(2) When prompted, press 'R' to load the Recovery Console, where you will be given the option to 'log into' the operating system on your hard drive
(3) Run the following command (which will take a while):
chkdsk /p
This will check your hard drive for errors and attempt to correct (and recover) it.

(3) Run the command
fixboot which will attempt to fix the boot sector on your drive
Furthermore, Microsoft's
Article 297185 reminds you to use 80-wire cables to connect your hard drive to your motherboard (instead of the 40-wire cables)
