memory beep

hello

i have an a 64 3000+ on an asus kv8dx with 512 mb (2x256) pc 3200 ram and ami bios v1002 007............

occasionally i get one beep from my computer, this occurs long after startup,

the ami bios site basically i should take the ram sticks out and replace them amking sure that they are firmly in place.

my question then relates to the ram slots of which ther are three, two yellow sots and a blue one. The two yellow slots are in use.

so what is the blue slot for and why is it a different colour?

If i use one stick in the blue slot and one in a yellow slot might this cure the beep?

any info appreciated

I am assuming you mean the "Asus K8V Deluxe"

The different colors simply distinguish the different number of slots. Some boards support 'dual-channel' memory, which would go into specific memory slots. Your motherboard supports only Single-Channel memory, so the colors don't really have much importantance other than to signify which is the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd DIMM slots.

DIMM 1 is the blue slot, and DIMMs 2/3 are yellow. You will want to put one of your sticks in the DIMM1 BLUE slot, and the other stick in the DIMM 2 slot (the 'middle' yellow slot).

If you place both RAM sticks in the yellows.. you could be limiting your overall RAM speed. Refer to chapter 2 (page 2-12) in your manual for more information

Furthermore, if you are doing any overclocking, a memory 'beep' is common (in Asus boards at least) and is usually just a false alarm.
