ati radeon standard vga problem

I just did a sytem recovery on my comp so everything is factory set. I had a geforce 2 but now own a radeon 9600 which was installed when i did the recovery. I wanna do the catalyst but can't cuz i get an INF error and it says to set to standard vga. I tried hitting f8 when bios loaded and selection run vga but that didn't help me install the catalyst.

While trying the system recovery, did that remove the nvidia detonators or forceware drivers, which ever you were using?
Make sure you have removed the nvidia drivers completely from your system, also make sure to disable antivirus software first and make sure windows accepts even unsigned drivers by ignoring they aren't signed.

I changed drivers the other day, I erased all my ati drivers etc, but did not restart pc. so when I went into (display, settings etc.) and went to adaptor it showed no drivers. When installing ati drivers etc., you have to have some kind of driver there, I got same error. So I restarted pc and let windows put a standard driver in for me. Then when i went to install ati drivers etc. it worked because it was able to recognize a driver and replace it.

See if that works also.

always before putting in new hardware, erase existing drivers to avoid complications...

Yes. You MUST have the standard vga adaptor in place BEFORE cat's install. Its in the "readme" file that is labled "readme" in the cat install. Like first big white page that comes up! How to install. Read under that.

To sum it up.

Go to control panel
Choose your vga adaptor
Right click it-choose properties in options tab.

Choose update driver.
Now select driver manually
Choose standard vga adaptor
Now save and restart

Now do the cat install. It'll go now. Also its a 9600 so DO install dx9 before cat's if you have not done so already.

By the way its not ati driver's fault as with a oem OS install it would be standard vga already. Prebuilt pc's with restore disks are just images of drive on cd like B's recorder gold or Norton makes. Bootable one step reisntall of all drivers software and os. Ergo the problem for you was factory it had a Nvidia Geforce2. So it installed those drivers. Not standard vga. Image is a snap shot of hard drive-it wont know the diff.
