i am confused and need some help
can anyone tell me what the difference is between ECC sdram and registered ECC sdram?
are they interchangable--i mean if one works in my system will the other also work?

Well they should work, the difference is ecc is error correcting codes, having two sticks that atleast have that is for the best, but keeping them exactly the same especially if the system requires ecc, registered modules, but the ideal situation is to use two identical sticks.
For more information of parts of the memory sticks you should watch this presentation even tho it is for ddr, the ecc and register or buffered part still applys.

Registered DIMMs are electrically different from normal "unbuffered". Either need the chipset, board hardware and BIOS to support them. Registered is typically found in big irons - servers, serious workstations and the likes - and thus often comes combined with ECC technology.
Normal desktop PCs mostly use plain unbuffered DIMMs w/o ECC.
