I did this last year in my garage. I didn't build them. Home Depot has already built shelves that are easy to put together. It will prob cost you more to build your own. These are metal, 5 shelves, and can hold hundreds of lbs.

Also, some of the auto parts stores have heavy duty plastic shelving.

Can't blame you, factory-made units are fine, but too restrictive. But they ARE cheap & fast if it'll fill the need or fit the space. What kind of shelving do you want? Wall hanging? If so, what types of walls? With open-frame stud walls, shelf hanging is pretty darn simple, while concrete walls are a major pain for this.
What will go on the shelfs makes a big difference too - they need to be strong enough! For garage shelves, I'd overkill because they'll get weighted down at some point over the years. At least ½" plywood for the shelf, ripped to width, no greater than 12". Make brackets from 2x2's, built into a 90 degree triangle. Place a bracket on every other stud with 3" screws, NOT nails - you may want to move them some day!
If they're likely to hold REALLY heavy things, then increase the thickness & # of brackets accordingly!!

<edit> - added emphasis on "at least"

Personally, I'd go with 5/8th's thick Plywood. 1/2 inch just never seems strong enough, plus thicker plywood gives you more options if you want to mount something to the shelve ( flexibility! ). Of course, I tend for overkill on everything, but what the heck! If it's worth doing, it's worth Overdoing!

Take a piece of paper and a pencil, sit in the middle of the garage and picture what you want to go where, and then draw it out on paper.Do some rough figures of how large each section should be,and then add or subtract to get it to fit the space perfectly.

Works for me,but I'm not the organization king or anything
