Not sure if this is allready implemented because it has been a while since I signed up on these forums but maybe making new members read the FAQ then have a quiz on it when they sign up to prevent probs with using "choice" words and thread craping. Might not prevent probs with members already signed up but maybe it will prevents new members from being banned by either repeated use of "choice" words, advertising their site or any other reasons for getting banned.
The quiz can be integrated into the sign-up process so that they have to take the quiz and have 3 tries to pass it to become a member.
Might not prevent people that blatantly break the rules from breaking them but might help people that don't know the rules and don't want to take the time to read them.
When I first signed on to techimo I didn't know most of the rules and for the first few weeks I was to lazy to read them. As a consequence I'm pretty sure I broke a few of those rules that I otherwise would not have if I knew the rules. Having the quiz will make people actually read the rules instead of just click agree(you can have take quiz on FAQ instead).
Don't know if this has been suggested before or if its a good idea or something that can be easily integrated into the sign-up process but just wanted to throw the idea out just in case in it is a feasable and good idea.
Even without bad intentions, any smallest complication to something that should be quite easy could make me or anyone refrain from registering.
Things such as the free registration without any reason to view websites, like Washington Post for example will not have the priviledge of having me as registered.
skuz maybe your right and will make some people(with good intentions) rethink about registering. So maybe a quiz wouldn't work out good but maybe including the FAQ may still be a good idea.
What rules do you think the new members are breaking?
If it were me I never would have signed up here for my original post if I had to take a quiz. And enforcing someone to read a bunch of text when you've got a SUBMIT button at the bottom of the screen is pretty much impossible too.
You might be able to abbreviate some of the rules that you think new posters are breaking but you won't be able to get the vast majority of new members to read it. Honestly, I haven't even read it yet and I've been here for more than a year.

Yeah, I guess now that I think about it I might not have signed up for my original post too so the current system might be fine with the mods PMing(and if needed ban) the few people that break the rules.
On the other hand, if you just flash up the FAQ, and require a registrant to click "I have read and agree", it's just like the click-through EULAs that people don't read, either.
That may work, but again that is really annoying..
Especially if you don't need any tech help but want to post something that a new user may want to share..
I am sure the amount of people registering would go down..
well since I'm going to be the newest person here to post a reply {so far anyways} I think the basic idea is a good one I've seen alot of newbies posting links to promo sites and what not but I've also seen alot of members with alot of posts that break the rules as well. I've noticed more and more rule breaking in the traders forum however Socal and the other mods have been doing a great job of cracking down
edit by the way how many of us could actually pass a test on the forum rules?? I know I read some of them and I read the traders rules but I'm not sure I could pass a test
Now that I think of it the idea probably wouldn't work because if someone signed up to advertise a website then they would try to pass the test then post their spam.
