Zero reply threads?

Check out the bottom left on http://linuxquestions.org They have a "zero reply" threads box kinda like we have a newest post box. I think this box is helpful on threads that should have answers but get overlooked/missed for one reason or another.

Would it be possible to implement this on perhaps a per forum basis? Maybe at the bottom somewhere? or is that too much clutter?

On an overall basis? (though I think we are too diverse overall for this to be effective)

Anyone else think this is a kickin idea

Jkrohn

That's actually a very interesting idea. I like it.

Surprised this is first it's been brought up.

hmmm. But when do things move out of the box? Do the threads absolutely require a reply to move on?

Some threads gets zero or one reply and that's all there needs to be. I'd hate to see unneeded and "fluff" replies simply to get some of messages out of the box.

-----------

How about this idea to encourage replies to zero threads: first reply to new threads count as 2 towards your post count. And anyone deemed to be abusing the system, by just replying with "Hi. Can't help ya, but welcome to...." will be docked 2 posts counts per incident.

Blah! That's just making more works for the mods. That's no good.

hmmmm, you got the wheels turning though.......hmmmm...

maybe instead of having a box.. there can be a button.. "View 0 reply threads" no box to clutter.. and same solution..

good idea.. I've seen a good amoutn of 0 threads go unanswered.. even had a few of mine go unanswered..

Of course it's too late now...but I think it would have been hilarious if this thread went unanswered and remained a zero posts thread.

No reason really. I do like the idea. But I guess I would just appreaciate irony. But that's so like me.

LinuxNewbie.org has a 'read new posts' function, I developed a technique over there which may help in the mean time.
Here is the link, and maybe print this:
Quote:
I think we could use a 'bash dunbar' session for him posting his techniques to keep new posts from disappearing from the new posts list.

A] click forum button
B] click 'View New Posts' link
C] look for the numbers of pages of new posts.... click 'Last' page link
D] start at the bottom of the page (roll that scroll wheel, son)
E] scrolling upwards, look for zero replies (a bagel)
F] decide if you even have a clue about the topic listed, consider the forum it is posted in as well.
That is where the bash dunbar part comes into play: clueless? I admit it, usually.
G] to post something, if you do have a hint of a clue, I use my 'open link in new window' browser feature (new tab would work as well)... note whether the member is less than 5 posts or so, say "Welcome to Linux Newbie!" (no, do not enter "Welcome to TechIMO", as I have done in the past ).
H] submit the post when all is hunky dory
I] close the window
J] refresh the current window: your reply which you just closed has just altered the list of new posts, and other people may have posted in the time it takes you to think up your witty response (if you are me, that means hours)
K] scroll upwards, pick a new bagel, repeat Steps E] through K] ad nauseum.

Hint: refresh the master window every few minutes, bagels get answered by other members, so by the time you get there, a bagel might be a cruller (one).

HTH, HAND.

I think this is a terrific idea, even if it would cost some folks a few ^bump^ posts.

I especially like the idea for a button to view zero-reply threads.

DUnbar, the view new posts is helpful, but the zero posts that I'm talking about woudn't (for the most part) be new. They would be oldish (1-2 days maybe more) where they had gotten pushed off of the "visible" section of forum pages.

I actually like the idea of a button or link somewhere better than a box, so modify my original suggestion

I wonder if you can make search constraints for only zero posts.....
