Work Spell checker revisted :)

I know this idea has been floated many times, and by me at least once before

But ScottW did say if we found a free easy to use spell checker that we should tell him.

Well, I found one. Sort of. Not completely free, but only about US$100 for a domain licence, and I can't see that it's a yearly fee or anything.

Anyway, it's Aussie made so it must be good

Check it out here: http://www.tcpiq.com/tcpiq/spellcheck/default.asp

Hope this is useful.

Again, I reiterate that this suggestion should be an option for those who want to spell check their posts, not mandatory for every post.

This looks like it is.

Cheers
Mick the nitpicker who can't type but can spell LOL

PS they have a nice line speed tester too. http://www.tcpiq.com/tcpiq/Linespeed/Default.asp

edited for spelling

Mandatory would be a disaster. No spell-checker is smart enough to recognize a correct but unfamiliar word and LEAVE IT ALONE.

Mind you, human beings are pretty bad there too. I once published a paper that said a certain conclusion was "predicated upon..." something. The editor "corrected" it in galleys to the nonsensical "predicted upon". I changed it back; he re"corrected" it to "predicted" in page proofs. I changed it back to "predicated" again, but when the article came out it read "predicted". The idiot didn't know that "predicated " was a word, much less that it was the right word.

If enough people want it as an option, then why not.

Personally, I don't spell much bad and if I do it's quicker to load Word than a spell checker on my 56k......at least that's how it was with the last spell checker.

Theo my argument against mandatory was I didn't want the spell checker telling me IDE LOL VB Dim etc was spelled wrong lol
Too much tech talk to get spell checked everytime
However, especially in community I think people would like it.. I'm not too bad of a speller so its all the same to me

Check out the link, ppls. This is a client side spell checker, so you would need at least MS Word 97 for it to work for you (didn't realise that before).

Although that makes it easier for TechIMO, as there would be no real server load. And for those on 56K the spell checking is done by your CPU, not by the server.

Interesting.

Cheers
Michael

edit: and it seems it needs IE as well, as it uses ActiveX only. Suppose that means Mozilla and Opera won't work with it. Oh, well, never mind. Nice try, Mick

I don't care for spell checkers that well.

for example if you meant to use the word too and typed in two, it won't see the error, cuz its not miss spelled. will only pick it up if you also check for grammer.
