About full mailboxes (private messages)

This is a very annoying and IMO unnecessary problem.

I don't have any idea how difficult it might be to implement but what about this idea:

Have the private message system set to allow users a limit for their mailbox (either number of messages or amount of space) just as it is now I guess. Except, when that limit is reached, instead of just blocking any incoming messages, why not have it automatically delete the oldest message in that person's inbox?

It wouldn't take long for people to understand that if they really want to keep some of their messages then they need to move them to a "saved messages" folder or something like that.

This would almost eliminate the irritating message "full mailbox, too bad for you, you're just gonna have to wait and send it later." Of course the system wouldn't delete any unread messages so the "full mailbox" error would still possibly come up if someone had a box full of unread mail…but I'd expect that to be rare.

----------- or -----------

Possible solution #2

When someone's mailbox is full, then send the message to a holding queue where it'll stay until the destination mailbox is emptied. This would at least be less irritating for someone who is simply sending a message and isn't the party guilty of not tidying up their mailbox.

----------- or -----------

Possible solution #3

When a user's mailbox is full, have it effect their status. For example, maybe it could restrict users from being able to post messages in the forums until their mailbox has more free space.

I dunno, just thinking aloud…mainly because I'm irritated that someone's mailbox is full and they are not here to clean it out and I'm now going to have to save my message I typed to them and then later on I'm going to have to remember to try and resend that message assuming I can remember where I saved it. 8^/

I agree it would be nice to have some way to still send a message if the recipient's PM box is full, as it is annoying to have to retype it all or something. Your suggestions have merit, but dunno how easy a hack they would be in vBulletin

Voogru has a hack where users can d/load PM's onto their own hard drive, which would be nice - but it wouldn't solve the prob of people letting them fill up and not tending them.

]onder if ScottW knows of any useful hacks that could do the kind of stuff you suggested.

Cheers
Mick

What about an email to tell you that your account is full? Or does it already do this?

Anyhoo, Most of my space (when used : no one sends me PM's ) taken up by return messages. Is there a way of stopping sent message being saved?

I think that many people would like to see a "setting" for this.

Also, I would like to see a "setting" for the default number of days view. Now that it's at 2 days, I think many of us just forget about stuff we would ordinarily delete if we saw it when we opened our PM panel. It might in the long run save disk space..

Also about downloading messages....
I am not a patient person, I finally toss stuff I know I should save but just don't have the patience to do so. It is very time consuming to copy and paste messages into a text file. I know Scott, that this would be a real benefit to the Mods.

Here is another idea:

Lets assume the max number of PM's is 100.
Have a notification sent to the users e-mail or inbox when they reach 80 PM's for example.

I also think that it should send an email whe your box is full/almost full. Mine was full with the messages sent/traking (don't know if those take up space)

I think there should also be an option to disable the caching of the sent messages. That would solve a lot of problems with the full message boxes.

On a side note, when is the subscription thing coming out to get more space, etc.?

here is an example:

Peeshawn has the simplest idea, IMO.

I agree with Out on the magnitude of the problem......*coughcough*
