Guest Posting??

Ok, this is part question part idea. Is it possible for a guest to post on the boards? Like some guy who randomly stumbles on the site and wants to ask a tech question, or wants to answer a question he may see, but doesnt want to regiester on the boards. I know what many times when i visit over to sysopt and see no one answering questions I want to help out, but either i forgot my pw, or my account was disabled for not being used and that would be handy to help out. Is this a bad idea? Would this open up a can of worms with the whole credibility / moderation issue? Just a though I had.

In general I see your point. Its not a bad idea.
But how could it be put in place without opening the boards up to the random characters that float around posting anywhere they can just to cause trouble??

i thought in tech support area guest but i guess that was on Sysopt. i thought it was a good idea to have it only in the tech area.

no one seemed to abuse the option

I believe the reason it is not allowed is because of the spam issue. Scott and the rest of the staff work hard to keep this a "family" atmosphere. That would be very difficult if there was no way to keep people from abusing the forums. I believe at Sysopt, when Scott was there, guests were allowed to post in the Tech Support area and maybe the community. They tried to allow guests to post in other forums, but people really didn't behave within the forum rules. One problem was of course vulgar language and vulgar user names. So, until this can be resolved it might not be possible to allow this. I will pass it on though.
Thanks
Dave

I am a member of several Aussie boards which alllow guest posts, and it does get abused. Some delinquent members will not log in, and then say what they please without regard for others. Ugly and unsociable, which is why I prefer TechIMO and don't frequent those boards much.

IMO there is no need for Guest posts - if you want to post, make yourself known. Just like if you come to my house and want to come in. Identify yourself, and take responsibility for what you say.
