TechIMO Revamp
Well, if you have any idea (and since most of you guys don't read my posts) you will know....
There should be 4 sections in TechIMO. Hardware, Software, DC, and (this is the iffy one) Development.
They should be seperated rather more, along with seperate post counts at the top of the screen.
The user online list should not be on the forums list, but instead accessible via a button somewhere.
The forum rules thing under the new post thing should be put next to the Message box.

I like the user online list, as is. But, that's just my two cents.

Where would you put Networking & Internet?
That one really spans the two.
So are you saying either dump gaming entirely, or mix it in with software?
Why is Development questionable? Is it something you're just not interested in? Or is it something you'd mix in with software?
Where would you put community? Just ditch it? Quote: |

| Completely lost me on that one lol Quote: |

| I understand this one, but if you're concerned about your privacy, you also have the option of being "Invisible" to the forums online status. Quote: |

what message box?
Not entirely disagreeing, primarily asking for a clarification on your suggestions.
I actually like how its seperated now.. IMO |

I really like the way it is seperated now too. That's one of the reasons I stay here at TechIMO. If they do any major revamping, I am afraid it will ruin some of the reasons I post and play here. |

| I think that software generally covers it, and that it might actually be beneficial to mix it in. Quote:

Completely lost me on that one lol
| I mean that like on the main TechIMO page, the post count at the top of all screens should also have the seperate section... and that the very top with the logo should change depending on your section. Quote:

| I don't care if people know that I'm online, it just makes the forums page look dirtier. Quote: |
The forum rules thing under the new post thing should be put next to the Message box
| When you make a new message, near the bottom there is a rules thing. that should be moved next to the compose box.

Maybe this would be more satisfying? 3 Sections:
Hardware: Self-Explanatory
Software: Development, Software, Gaming
Community: Community Forums, DISTRIBUTEDCOMPUTING

Hardware, Gaming, and Development are the three areas that we chose to delve into initially. TechIMO will eventually sprawl out into more areas (once the ones we have really take off), while maintaining a community feel in each area.
As for the forums, they have not yet undergone the same transformation as the rest of the site and yes, the threads at the top will be limited to whatever category you're browsing (hardware, dev, gaming).
Gaming is a HUGE area and the people who run TechIMO are interested in it. If you're not, then stick to Hardware. TechIMO obviously has its roots in hardware - any software that isn't related to games or software/web development should go under hardware, IMO. As for development, I have been a web developer and programmer for 7 years now - it's what I know and what I do, probably better than hardware. When my work load lightens up a bit, I'll be writing many articles for the dev section.
The site is continually evolving. In just about 4 months, we have accomplished a huge amount of development work to create the site's applications (the content management system for articles and reviews, the news system for news discussion, the user reviews app, the photo gallery application which largely fuels this site through license fees), and with very little money - most companies and sites would be in complete disbelief at what we've accomplished using our available resources in this timeframe, and we're just getting warmed up.
Scott
P.S.- "Community" isn't a topic. We chose to divide the site by area of interest. The site has a central "community", and each section has a community. Going forward, each section will likely get its own community forum.

My 2 cents - gaming is not my major - but thats me - I find that it is hard to get - not attention - but comments back - about what I am working on and hit the wall on - most of the stuff I have been working on is very box/MB specific and I see were Cody is coming from and agree - Its not that we want to tell, you, Scott how to run this - Cause we only see our small picture of it - to us our view is big to us - you looking at it - its small - or depends - on the area. I guess we are trying to suggest how to answer where we are coming from.
I run 800x600 - and recently had to go 1something to get the pages to run correctly. So I find some pages - cluttered -
MY older eyes are not the best at squinting these days!
trying not to minimalize! - pm me if ? - wiz | |

The only reason I had the idea for community as a section is because that and DC is, believe it or not, the thing that mostly goes on at this site. Community is huge and so is DC. and it's very sad to see so many threads go unanswered because people are sitting there talking about nothing at all in the DC threads (well some of them).

Many threads go unanswered ? I do not think that's the case. They might not be answerd immediately, but if you 'bump' them and remind people then they will get answerd.
I would say very few posts do not get answerd.
The Community forum, or any other forum, are hardly a cause for concern. |
