Put PM, Current User & Other Info to the Right of the Main Forum Page
Something that looks REALLY good, is a main forum page where the "Currently Active Users" , "Welcome to the forums ________." , and "Private Messages" section is put the RIGHT of the main forum list...

Yea thats a cool idea. Better then having that stuff down the bottom where I often forget to look. |

Good idea brandon184, but now we have got the users logged in info at the top of the forum list now, would it not be a better idea to have PM just underneath this?
Having this at the side like you suggest makes less room for the forum info IMHO.

Most of run higher resolutions, so it's just sprawled out across the screen anyway. I doubt taking away 200 pixels on one side would hinder anyone, except the 640x480 users.
Although, I think having PM info just below "Users Logged In", like you suggest would also be good. I just dislike having that PM info at the very bottom of the screen...

brandon.
Apparently you forgot the issues with the banners on the right side...
I understand what you're saying, and personally as long as it was only on the main forum page I'd be ok with it.
Besides if it was on every forum page, it would be even more work for the DB
(I know that's not what you were referring to, but in case somebody else asks )

To be quite honest, I couldn't really care less where the private message area is, as long as I can see it, without having to scroll down to the bottom-most point of the page....

I for one, am against your design. While I run at a high resolution, 1600X1200, I still don't care for it.
I like the PM thing where it is personally. It is after all a Forum page, and having it at the bottom, for me, doesn't take the focus away from the forum as it is the first thing you see.
Just my thoughts.

| It's a matter of convenience. Most of us aren't interested in scrolling down to the bottom of the forum page, just to check if there is are any new PM's. Regardless if you recieve them consistently or sporadically.

| You should make that "some of us". I like it right where it is, thank you very much. |
