Why must it be more than 256 mb?
Lexar http://www.digitalfilm.com/ has some USB devices here that work with Smart cards.
I just got a Lexar 256 mb JumpDrive 2.0 Pro and it works great... way better than any Zip drive and the size if a butane lighter.

Maybe someday, but USB is not good for my camera.

My camera needs more storage, and I want to get as much memory as possible taking a trip where I want to avoid carrying a dozen memory cards. You can't always email the images home, and I won;t have any other way to get the card emptied while I'll be away, so the memory card simply has to hold a lot of images. Weeks worth of stored vacation shots will eventually add up! Quote: | Lexar has some USB devices here that work with Smart cards. | Just the SmartMedia card, please. I can't put a USB device into the cameras memory slot!

The Lexar site has 512 MB smart media cards available( and I'm sure you can find other manufacturers), what sort of camera are you using?
My Kodak DX4900, set to take 4 MP pictures, will take 103 with a 256 MB smart card, so depending on the resolution your camera is capable of using and what resolution pictures you want , a 512 MB card taking 2 MP shots could hold about 300 or more pictures.
With just a couple 512 MB cards you could overwhelm yourself with pictures... unless you plan on taking more than 600 pictures, wouldn't two 512 MB smart cards be all you should need?
Buy.com http://www.buy.com/retail/computers/....asp?loc=15579 has a Viking 1GB smart card for $242.99 after MIR and several 512 GB cards for around $95... it just depends on how much money you want to spend.
There may be other sites with even lower prices, so look around.

Thanks anyhow, but wrong card type....
Quote: Originally posted by Harold7 The Lexar site has 512 MB smart media cards available( and I'm sure you can find other manufacturers), what sort of camera are you using? | Thanks for trying, Harold7. On buy.com, I do not see SmartMedia formats that are > 128 megs. For all the other card formats (e.g. Memory Stick, Compact Flash, etc), I definitely see >256 megs, but I need SmartMedia format memory cards. (aka SSFD cards, as per this link). I'm not trying to be lazy, this is a plea because I have not found such large capacity cards, despite searching every few days... Quote: With just a couple 512 MB cards you could overwhelm yourself with pictures... unless you plan on taking more than 600 pictures, wouldn't two 512 MB smart cards be all you should need? | Even one, just one card.... 2.1 Megapixels jpeg files should be over 600 hundred shots on one 512 meg card.
You see, I do not want to swap cards - these things are too small that I might lose the one 'spare' card (along with the contents - hundreds of photos). If the 512 meg card is never full and stays in the camera, there shouldn't be a risk of losing the card! I have not seen any of these capacities at pricewatch (for SmartMedia format cards). I believe that the card format has hit its maximum capacity at 128 Megs, so this is probably a moot point; I also cannot find any tech papers that discuss the SmartMedia capacity shortcoming.
If it ever comes to pass, it'll be a hot item, IMO.

Just what model digital camera are you using?
Is this camera strictly limited to using Smart Media or can it also use Compact Flash cards?

Dunbar - as you may recall, I'm a fan of SmartMedia also. I never seen one >128 either, and can't find one now.
But I do have a suggestion for your situation. Using, and keeping track of, multiple cards is easy if you just store them in the photo folders in your wallet. That's one thing you're NOT likely to misplace!! Won't hurt the cards, I've done it.

Yeah I second Hey-Todd, I'm pretty darn sure that smartmedia is limited to 128mb... that's the very reason Olympus and Fuji created the xd card as it will have a max capacity of about 3gigs.

Not here

Won't hurt the cards, I've done it. | I've seen one smartmedia card at work get busted just from repeated inserting and removal (to put the card into a card reader, then back into the camera). I've 'lost' my wallet twice in the past month, and I'm not yet on that vacation trip :-\ Being the son of a Murphy, I think I'd better not push it. The camera would be kept with batteries and a mini tripod in a camera pouch fastened to my belt. I've never yet lost my belt.
The goal here is to use a SmartMedia card that is as large as possible and simply leave the card in the camera; it sounds like nobody has links for either the 'Official' statement that SmartMedia has a limitation, nor any links for SmartMedia cards bigger than 128. My choices are fairly fixed. Thanks to all who took the time to post.
