What is a half-ISA slot ?

USRobitics modem says it needs a "half ISA slot".

Huh?

Narrow or short card ?
Actually uses only half of the slot (the bracket is normal I assume ?) ?
Is there such a thing as "half ISA slot" ?

da DOOOG wants to know
and this where yopu come when you wanna know

Old 8-bit cards (for Intel 8086 and 8088 CPUs) used a shorter slot, but would fit in half of an ISA 16-bit slot. A modem is basically in-and-out datastream, and a Winmodem has the processing done by the CPU anyway, so it doesn't need anything too fancy.

Actually, it's referring to the length of the card itself, and indicates that the card is half or less the maximum length that would fit in the case from back to front.

Your case probably comes with some funny little brackets that will support the other end of a really long card. It's been a while since I saw a card that needed them.

GTCHA !

Thanks , Folks.

Now gotta contiplate if a USRobitics ISA hard modem with jumpers is needed/ and a good investment.

I hate it when a mobo has a PCI and ISA or CNR ( which can share a PCI slot , I think) near each other and hard to tell if they share the slot or no. Manual no help--just says they are there.

Like to get the ISA--but not if it eats the PCI. Only three of 'em as it is. They should mark them: hungry for slot !

Hint: never buy a microATX unles you really have to. You end up spending more money on external this N' that. And quite truthfully, I'm not sure if they (externals) work like they say.

It's going into my favorite room: da Kitchen !
