Apology to anyone who bought the 20g HD's from Dell for $55.00

I've certainly suggested some garbage in my time, this time I've outdone myself.

The WD200 7200rpm drives test out at a snails pace, 9k/sec !

The Maxtors that came instead of the WD's for some only did a bit better, 12k/sec!

I ran the same HD utility(Disk Speed32)against my 15g IBM Deskstar 7200 and the results, 23k/sec!

All are using the 80pin Blue ended cable, 2 machines use the same mobo.

These are prolly OK to replace a 4400rpm Quantum Slowfoot but not up to par for standard 7200 drives.

I KNEW these only had a 1mb buffer but this performance just is too pitiful..

Sorry for the foul.

If you hadn't said something I never would have known. I've never bothered with a performance check on the WD's but they seem fine for the computing I do. But then again I call my 19" RCA a big screen. What do I know?
I still like'em Doc

yea doc. no problem. i put one in a k6-2 500 that had a 8gig hdd.

and the other in a duron 850 that had a 10gig.

so both of my customers were satisfied with their upgrade.

and they loved the price.

No problem Doc. I am happy with the drives. I realized before buying they were not the fastest drives out there. You are not and should not feel responsible for purchases made by others.

Just keep telling us about the great deals!!!!!

Could it be a bad drive Doc?

I had two identical Quantums that got extremly different results even when configured exactly the same way. I had the same problem in two machines, I could not get DMA to stay enabled on one of the drives. HDtach reported very poor performance on the none DMA drive. This might not be a DMA issue, it could be other things.

I have not used Speeddisk32 so I can not compare those numbers, but they do look bad.

Doc Itchy Bod:

I'm curious about Speed Disk 32: is it roughly the same as HDTach?

If not, can you recommend a trial download site?

Thx.

Drop me an e-mail and I'll send it to ya.

The screen shot looks similar to HD Tach.

Note !
When closing the program, do not use the X in the top right corner.
Go to File and Exit Only !

Otherwise ya get an kernel32.dll error

Anyone who wants the free Disk tool, E-Mail me.

I've changed it today @ 7:25pm EST, this was because the other e-mail addy sometimes waited 2 or more days to deliver my mail.

The HD utility is tiny, about 92k~
