"Ladies and Gentlemen, THE BEATLES!!"

It was 40 years ago today...

Anybody remember that night?

It was America in 1964...deeply wounded by the death of President Kennedy the previous November...

Then, that incredible evening show....suddenly, there was this raucous, joyous noise, these four kids from England, on the venerable Ed Sullivan show on Sunday night!

I was a ten year old kid then, gawking in amazement (at a crappy little b/w TV,) and to my incredulous delight, the Beatles laid an artistic smackdown that nobody has ever duplicated...

Tonight, on the David Letterman show, they showed that historic performance of the Beatles doing "I Wanna Hold Your Hand", and the thrill was still the same!

Amazing!

I remember my parents and I discussing it Knot when talking about their own childhoods...... wish I had been old enough to see/realize it... I was born that year.

Its rare that we get to witness (much less enjoy) moments in our lifetimes that have such a profound effect on us.

Who would have thought that four young men from England would have had such an influence on America and the world.........?

I was 2 so I don't recall much.

I think it was '65 or '66 they came Down Here. Similar scenes of wildness and stuff, they say.

Cheers
Mick

I had just got back from a "Med cruise" and did not see the show. However, I did get to go to the world premeir( in NYC ) of " Hards Days Night" a few months later. Those were the days of the "Innocence" until the war broke out.

There's a DVD available of all the Ed Sullivan shows with the Beatles. It's really well done -- nice packaging, good quality. Plus, you get to see Senor Wences and "our friend, that little Italian mouse, Topo Gigio!" All in all, a "really big shoe."

Oh, and there may even be some guys spinning plates, lol. And commercials that will bring back some memories, too!

I remember it well because the Liverpool sound was the death of rock and roll the way I knew it.

But in time I learned to enjoy the Beatles as well as a lot of other English groups.................

I am a lifelong resident of San Francisco and actually had the chance to see their last live performance at Candlestick in SF. But back then, I thought they were a gimmick.

The first song I liked was "Please, please me." I didn't get into the Beatles until "Rubber Soul" and "Sgt. Peppers" was my favorite Beatles album.

Women would raise a holler if "Run For Your Life" was now just coming out! So much for the "peaceful" John Lennon.

I was more of a Rolling Stones fan back then. In those days, fans didn't like the Beatles and the Stones. It was the Beatles OR the Stones.

I said I was more of a Rocker than a Mod. But I dressed Mod to the hilt! I had a couple of classmates who would make me custom clothes for double the price of the material. It's how they paid for their own clothes. Haven't dressed that well since!
