A little one sided though.

the claim that their drive to space might have petered out is pretty presumptuous. Their drive to space may have also been even more aggressive than ours as well. Investing every nickle made on survival of the race due to an apparenly dying sun or the likes.

They could have come out of their dark ages having harnessed the atom due to the fact that all their nuclear ores were in pure form. Starting with seemingly perpetual steam engines and moving right to ION drive and solar sails.

all it takes for technology to advance is the right person observing at the right time.

As far as humanoid appearance. They could look humanish or not. although not the most efficient form it does provide some advantages standing on two feet when it comes to manipulating your environment.

But the famous scene where the alien creature emerges from John Hurt's stomach is the most unrealistic of all.
