I thought embedding was drawn up by Washington/Downing Street to make sure that journalists went and filmed where they were told rather than working on their own initiative and filming uncensored? /cynical mode off

Sounds like an excellent conspiracy theory:

If the soldiers know where all the journalists are then the soldiers can do what they want where they know that there are no journalists.
