Translation of expression needed

Hi everyone,

I am having a small translation problem, I am writing something for a course "humanoid robots" and I am trying to describe ?????????.

In Dutch we call it "dom werk", which literally means "dump work".

E.g.: a calculator provides a lot of brute force, but is not intelligent. So I would say that what it does is "dom werk"

What expression is used in English to describe "dom werk".

It may be "dump work", but I am not sure. It doesn't sound good.

as far as if it were concerning mathmatical calculations it might be called "number crunching"....

or put in terms of workers you might think of "assembly line" people...they dont need any original thought or creativity..they just stand there and bolt in that same bolt everyday etc.
