Systems electronics..

so i was innocently sitting in electronics, and we were talking about capacitors

some idiot decides to ask how they came up with the formula for the time it takes a capacitor to charge (if you dont know what one is, you dont want to)

so the teacher says something, in strange math talk, and 20 mins later it was over, i thought, not too bad, then he says something like "well there are other things, but even this isnt important" (he says things that are not important alot, and i am glad cause i have no idea what any of it is)

anyway, i get home and think, "i will check out these formula things, how hard could they be.. and i find some pdfs and check them out (see pic)

that one is seemingly easy compared to other crap on those insane sheets (afaik, at least.. it has less squiggles then other "formulas" on those papers do)... i dont even know what the symbols are, let alone how to use that insane stuff

if i needed to know that stuff, i would just go work at mcdonalds now

*passes out in puddle of drool*

Just school fatigue, JacobM5727, or are you making some more global statement about the unimportance of specific kinds of knowledge?

All you need is one quarter of calculus and one quarter of calculus-based physics, and you'll be able to that stuff. Don't let it intimidate you.

i dont need that info for any of my classes, which is good cause its way too over my head

Doubt you even need calculus for that.

Equation for planar capacitance:

Capacitance = (Initial Energy * Surface Area)/distance (between plates)

Cylindrical seems to be a combination of the area of a cylinder with the equation above.

Now, deriving these equations. Whoo boy, that's some work there. Let you do the math on that one (literally)!

a lot of times in electronics you have THOSE type of equations and formulas...very complex..but then you also have what are called "empirical" formulas....which are shorter versions which are sort of "pretty close' type deals, lol

Empirical \Em*pir"ic*al\, a. 1. Pertaining to, or founded upon, experiment or experience; depending upon the observation of phenomena; versed in experiments.

2. Depending upon experience or observation alone, without due regard to science and theory;

so def #2 sort of gets the idea across...and unless you are DESIGNING caps...you wont see that formula much
