Army eyes troops in Iraq through 2006

Exceeding troop limits
Schoomaker also said Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld has authorized the Army to temporarily exceed the limit by as much as 30,000.

But Schoomaker said he was opposed to Congress passing legislation to permanently expand the size of the Army, mainly because it would be too costly.

“I’m adamant that that is not the way to go,” the Army chief said.

Members of the House panel expressed surprise that Rumsfeld had agreed that the Army needed as many as 30,000 more soldiers, since he has publicly opposed a legislative move to expand the service.

Rep. Ellen O. Tauscher said it sounded as if Rumsfeld was accomplishing through the use of his own executive powers the troop increase that he had resisted in Congress.

Lets see now no wmd, Sadam captured, Iraqui's want elections why are we needed to be in Iraq for two more years unless it is to guard the assets of Halliburton/Kellogg/Brown and root.

Really, they think they'll have are troops out that soon. Well that's good news.

I was thinking that there would be troops, either ours or someone else's, in Irag till at least 2010-2015.

But, I don't think we need to expand the size of the Army at this time either. We still have plenty of NG and ArmyRes people.

Whitebeard,

Do you look out your peephole for the little green men coming to take you away? You are the most paranoid person! There will not be a draft, mainly because the quality of draftees is on average low. I am quite happy with the all volunteer force and so is our leadership. The only ones who want to bring back a draft are the liberal democrats like Hillary Clinton. Could you focus your paranoia on the Art Bell show?

BTW, if we are out of Iraq or Afghanistan within this decade I will be surprised. Contrary to popular myth, wars are not instant gratification and it takes at least a generation to shift a countries paradigm.

It took less than a generation for 55,000 of my brothers to die in South East Asia. The returnees are telling the army to stick it. reups are at 4%. In my sons unit not one reup in four months.
Thats people with 16 years in opting for a discharge.

Unless we are invaded by all of South America, Canada and Mexico, I doubt we will ever see another draft.

Most of the people that are not going to reup are the ones that thought they could collect a paycheck for doing nothing at all. They will be replaced by the willing and it will go on like it has ever since 1973. A volunteer force, ones who "signed up for this" is much better.

Whitebeard,

At the current rate it would take 90+ years to reach Vietnam casualties in Iraq. Not to mention, we have learned a thing or too since then, mainly because we are not relying on inept draftees. You do not have a grasp of what the current military is at all. Many of us have tried to explain that we are the draft force of the late 60s/early 70s, but you refuse to listen to reason.

Russia spent a decade in Afghanastan. I do not see little green men I see inept leadership. outdated equiptment, untrained personel. Thats what I see. Grab ahop down to Ft Stewart and spend a weekend ther and then tell uds how great it is.
It is along long long way from D.C. to the real army.
People living in barracks that were condemed years ago. Wounded that have returned from Iraq that have to wait days for a doctors apointment. Before you deny any of this go to Stewart and see for yourself. The people that have told me of these conditions have no reason to lie about it, they have nothing to gain. One retired e9 I was talking to when I described the barracks My son was in said they were condemed 5 years ago when he was in Ft. Stewart. I am all for our troops I just want them to be treated in a proper manner. If you mistreat the troops they get out.
You will not have to worry about a pass a highway runs right through the base, no gates . The local civilians all use the nco club as the local night club on the weekends.
