They are named after their pre-historic ancester, the Buffalosaurus, which used to look like buffalo's, but with small protuding wings below the front legs.
These wings were after effects of evolution and served no practical purpose, other than to keep the flys off the Buffalo's belly.
Eventually, after the invention of fire, prehistoric man began to cook the small wings as a gift to their mates.
After discovering fossels of the Buffalosaurus wings, some 200 years ago, they realized a close resemblence to those of the wings of a chicken, and came up with the idea of "Buffalo wings"
The term has stuck ever since!
