WTF? Quote:
The school honor roll, a time-honored system for rewarding A students, has become an apparent source of embarrassment for some underachievers. | BooHoo...study damnit! Quote: | School officials are developing permission slips to give parents of the Nashville district's 69,000 students the option of having their children's work recognized. |
Two thumbs up for Nashville...right up your #$*! |

Yep... But I want to point out It's NOT the School or the teachers fault...
It's the bleeding heart sobs of the underachievers/parents and groups like the ACLU that have made it illegal in many places for teachers to publicly recognize students work on bulletin boards in their classrooms, use honor roll lists and such....
Chock up another one for the bleeding hearts of America

I think children should be rewarded monetarily for their accomplishments. That's how they're rewarded when they get a job, why not give grants that go into an account that earns interest. At 18, they can either use it towards college or spend it on Sour Punch Straws and Pepsi. The interest earned can be taken out and given back to the schools to give more grants to those deserving. Would help parents who have a hard time saving for college and would teach the children how it's going to be in "real life".

This is suprising. When I lived in Tenesse for a while, their recognition of excellent students was, well, excellent. Their gifted students program for elementary schools was incredible, going way above average but not at overkill levels.
I think by killing honor role, they completely miss the point. If it causes embarassment to these students, perhaps these students need help rather than what they want. Since when do people, especially grade-school kids, know what they want? Instead of punishihng hard working students, perhaps they should assist the uneracheivers so that they don't become overachievers.
It's not so much that they got rid of honor role, it's why they did. That one principal said that the days of ranking and sorting students is over. Hello? Has he a kid in high school? Where they sort students by CLASS RANK and GPA, and where colleges hand pick students that are anywhere from good to the best-of-the-best like picking grapes in the supermarket? Not preparing kids for this is a recipie for disaster.

On the other hand, they probably do still play basketball and football, and I'm pretty sure they keep score. I'm also pretty sure they don't select the teams by lot.
It's not anti-elitism; it's just one more example of the intrinsic anti-intellectualism of American life.

So what? Nashville public schools will probably be eliminated along with all public schools in the nation. Understand that No Child Left Behind is a blueprint for destroying public education, not enhancing it!

The change has upset many parents who want their children to be recognized for hard work.
| Maybe it would be a good idea to ask the kids how they feel about it. |

no kidding barney, because of course kids know what is good for them better than the people who have been trained to run the schools
