I'm not surprised. He's popular, he's a first offender, he's 64, he has a long record of public service, and he's no threat to the community (at least, when he's not in his car).
Still, a bit more time is what someone else with the same background might have got.

When it comes to killing someone he's a first offender. He's a habitual speeder and has been in accidents like this before, though. Only luck has kept him from killing someone before now.

And the public service tag is an oxymoron if ever I heard one. "Service" denotes a selfless act. Politicians are anything but selfless.
EDIT: Don't mean to beat up on your post, Theo. It's just that this guy burns me.

You just know, in this guy's "heart of hearts", there is no remorse. Only relief that he ain't gonna be dancin' in a skirt in a cell for Bubba for 5 to 9 years. This is the kind of personality we're talking about here. |

I'd be interested in knowing what first offenders in cases like this typically get. I doubt there is any consistency.
What really burns me is that after three years, his felony record will be wiped clean. |

First offender for killing someone... a long history of speeding... and several other accidents where he "didn't see someone."
