Pick a couple of stocks, etc...and follow them for a year or two. Seriously. You can't learn the market unless you understand the market.

Usually in your daily paper in the business section. explore the NASDAQ and research a few companies.

I did an online game a few years ago that gave you a virtual half million to play with in the stock market, and you bought and traded stock for a few weeks...pretty fun, although it teaches you to not just jump into it unaware.

I lost money.

For the basics of financial markets, try to get a copy of Passtrak Series 7. This is a licensing guide that covers the NASD exam material. It's not cheap, but you can probably grab a used one somewhere. For foreign currency trading, check out the Chicago Mercantile Exchange's site, www.cme.com. I believe they trade more currency futures than any other exchange. There's an education section there.

I have a subscription to Investor's Business Daily, a very good paper. (Although they have a ridiculous subscription price).

Redfury: We started with $100,000 in that game. The stock market isn't something that you want to just think you can learn overnight. (Although I was lucky and made about $10k).

Y'know, you're right...I saw a guy reach half a million in a short time....pretty amazing....guy obviously knew what he was doing.

Oh what I could do with a half a million though...

I'd probably lose it within 3 months time

do they still have those games online?

They are still around, just have to know where to look. The one I used was pretty good, I can't remember the name of it though.

you don't need a game, you can get similar results just by creating you own fantasy portfolio on loads of places online. www.fool.com and Yahoo Finance used to have something like it.
Those places are also good places to learn the ropes and principles.

Never play the stock market with money you can't afford to lose.
Only the pros tend to play with FOREX, and even then it usually isn't their own money. Unless George Soros is your mentor, I'd say that you have no business worrying about FOREX until you have a very good handle on the more basic stocks and other investment vehicles such as bonds, unit trusts and so on. Hedging would be another useful mechanism to understand.
