My Dishwasher has died.

The Jenn-air Dishwasher was installed in 1984 and we got it as part of the house purchase. Well it had been giving us problem for the last 4 years, and yesterday it stopped draining the water from the tub.

After wrestling with it today, I have decided to just replace it because it will cost me about $180.00 to have it repaired.

Does anyone know of the reliability of the new dishwashers? Which models are the best buy for the features, convenience, quietness and good cleaning?

Talk to Fyxxer. He is the appliance expert here. He's helped me out a couple of times when I was in a jam with my appliances.

All depends on what you are willing to spend on a new appliance. I'd say get something really nice if you plan on staying where you are long term, as it will serve you better in the long run.

While I don't know brands specifically, I do see lots of dishwashers as I get to work in new homes, both low end and high end. Some of the dishwashers out there are just awesome!

There is one model that actually has 2 drawers that allows you to batch clean! Need a couple of pots and pans cleaned quick? throw it in the bottom drawer! Need a few dishes for dinner, or just want to clean up after dinner, but don't want to waste all that dishwasher space? Pop them suckers in the top drawer and let go!

You also have the stealth machines....put a cabinet door on the front, a pull handle, and wala! hide the dishwasher! The controls are on the top of the door, hidden from the kiddies!

Cool stuff man, cool stuff.

Just go out and get yourself a hotpoint washer. I have installed those into Section-A homes, and those people beat them and they take it.

I'll see if I can get Fyxxer to reply. I did have this same question about 3 years ago and I asked Fyxxer. I ended up buying a Whirlpool Quiet Wash Plus. I'll dig him up.

Thanks guys, Esp. MTAtech for the consumer reports info- its a terrific help.

I was already leaning towards buying a Whirlpool, Kenmore(though I dislike Sears), or a Maytag. I havent heard much about Hotpoint dishwashers, but I'll check them out against the others.

As to the "wifes the dishwasher" idea - my wife is disabled and having the dishwasher is a boon to our housekeeping.

Toadman- burying or burning? No, I hope to separate it and sell the parts to defray the cost of the new dishwasher, though I may just take it to the junkyard.

I just replaced an 80's model hotpoint with a Whirlpool that is great so far.(2 months) Make sure you get a good 5 cycle not one of the cheap models that only have wash/rinse cycle. It will clean so much better.

BTW the model we got is a GU1500XTLS Whirlpool and purchased on the after Thanksgiving day sale for 15% off and $50 instant rebate came out to about $525 but well worth it my wife says anyway
