Anyone from Tacoma/Seattle??
Hi, is there anyone from Tacoma or Seattle on this forum? I'm thinking of moving there when I finish my education. I know the scenery is fantastic but is it a nice place to live? Are there enough jobs to find for a software engineer from the Netherlands? Are the people nice and friendly? Is it hard to find a house? Any information is more than welcome (URLs?). Thanks in advance.
Arthur.

WHOA!! Now that's a move!
I used to live in Everett, WA, just north of Seattle. It is a beautiful place to live, but make sure you make your yearly Dr. appointments to have the webbing between your toes cut! (you can see it rain/mist/drissle for 2-4 weeks straight!
Prices are high in the Seattle/Tacoma area, as well as the gang activity, but it all gets better the farther out you live. Marysville is getting to be the starting point to the north for nice living and prices. Maple Valley to the NE.
Here's the link to the Everett Hearld I still read it a couple times a week. Don't let it scare you too much, because there are many nice people there!

Hi,
I have several relatives that live in the Seattle area, so I've been up there quite a few times. Anyway, yeah, as sharder said, it's a bit expensive there. I'd think that if you found a place in one of the suburbs of Tacoma, the cost of living wouldn't be so tremendous.
The suggestions that sharder made are right on. Also check out Seattle Citysearch for just about any info you could want on the area. And another paper to look at would be the Seattle Times as they have a great classified advertisement section which would aid you alot in finding some place to live.
Anyway, I hope this was some help to you. Have fun with your move!

I have lived in the area all my life. I am from Tacoma but now live just south of there in Lacey..... Yea, House prices are very high taxes too. We do not have a state income tax which is nice. Traffic is horrible on the freeways during rush hour. Seattle would be your best bet for getting a job in your field. You will want to make sure you live fairly close to your job so you won't have to commute in the traffic. Crime isn't too bad but there are spots that it's just best to stay out of. Probably no different from any other city. The weather is very nice during the summer's. Most people think that it rains all the time but it really doesn't. It just seems like it. If you are into hiking this is the place to be. Lots of mountains to explore and places to ski. Seattle has all of the night life and sports teams. Tacoma really doesn't have much of that.
Check out the web site Tacoma

Hey, thanks for the info! I'm not sure yet about moving but I pretty much had it here in this country (don't get me wrong, Holland is a very nice place, but I think it's time for something new). I'm very fortunate with my type of education, there are jobs everywhere for engineers, so why not use it? Washington State looks like a very interesting place to me, especially the Tacoma area. I read a lot about it and in the pictures it looks like a very friendly and nice community, but is it true that Tacoma has a very high crime rate? I hope not..... Thanx for the replies and I hope to hear more........ Bye,
Arthur.
P.S. I don't have problems with a rainy climate, you should see the Dutch climate..... . As far as I know the climate there is pretty much the same as here.

I've lived in Bellevue all my life, and am currently at the UW in Seattle.
House prices are pretty crazy where I live ($500k and up), but if you get away from the large towns prices go down pretty quickly.
If you have to commute, make sure you're doing it on I-90. I've found that the other 3 major highways here frequently get pretty congested.
Scenery is really great, and if you don't like it you can drive for a few hours to the other side of the state and everything will be completely different.
Tacoma is famous locally for its smell, the "aroma of Tacoma" . I think they have a bunch of paper mills.

Thanx for the info.
I heard that the "aroma of tacoma" is history now because they improved those mills (let's hope so... ). I found a nice book in the library here in Eindhoven about the Northwest Pacific region, and I hope to hear a lot more from you nice people ..
Arthur.
