I have never understood the concept of poverty in america.

If I am physically able to work I will work. If I am not satisfied with my lot in life I will remake myself, move, and succeed to varying levels.

I truely have not got a problem helping the needy. Key operative NEED.

I can not understand the concept of staying where there is no work, crime is high and it is too expensive to live. OOPS that happened to me and I moved.

Lack of common sense? there are few people in my area who i could rely on to drive.

Like my dad once said to me "are there even a 1/3 of people in your class that you think will have enough common sense to drive properly?"

My answer was no, there isn't. Some people just can't think for themselves.

Some people are just lazy and will live with whatever life throws at them, even if there is a way out. Mehthinks if we got rid of social security and all that socialist crap, people would take it more seriously.

Ok you live in an area where there are no jobs and you can no longer afford to live in your current residence

How can you afford a new place to move?
How can you afford to move at all?
Maybe in your current area you're able to walk to where you need, or rely on others for transportation.

Its not that cut and dry unfortunately.
Yes many times poverty is self inflicted, but that is not always the case.

Welfare is not always an option, I know people who have had good jobs, and lost them due to the economy. Welfare is based on last years wages, so this year you're SOL.

Well lets see how can you move?

That kind of defeatest attitude is rediculous.

My great grandfather and thousands of immigrants today do it. They walk, run, bus, fly and float on inner tubes. Lets just use comercial transport. You work a great more hours cut your food intake to bare minimum to survive save a little money and get on a bus. How long would it take for you to walk 500 miles?

People also would do it with out the advent of social programs.

I am not saying it would not be hard but america is not about freedom from difficulty.

How could you afford a new place to live. with remaining money you rent a room from a little old lady whose little chicks have left the nest.

Again you would do it rather than starve. social services make it just nice enough not to want to be worth the discompfort of running.

hell I would not be against a govenment program to help people on welfare afford first and last, and bus fare. If you have two legs and two arms I think you can survive on your own if forced to. A little assistance with social changes like downpayments and the likes if fine.

What would you the tax payer rather do. pay 3000 dollars a month to keep a poverty "victim ) in a crime riddled slumb of new york or pay 3000 dollar one time payment to make another tax payer.

I heard some freaky things yesterday like 62% of people below the "poverty line" own at least one car. I think they could get a ride.

some other numbers included

I heard this on the radio yesterday.

By some accounts American poor live better than european average.

I thought that was interesting.

Quote:
After taking welfare benefits into consideration, the Census Bureau put the poverty gap at $48.8 billion.10 Thus, according to the Bureau, $126.2 billion spent on non-institutionalized persons in 1986 shrank the poverty gap by just $16.1 billion. Every $1.00 reduction in poverty, in other words, required at least $7.80 in welfare spending.
but that is just government stupidity.

I still contend that you can make a living. and unless you are unfit or have exhausted all possibility you need to struggle to survive.

The link is among the most perfect examples of my thoughts and theories on poverty
