New Jersey Extends Rights to Same-Sex Couples

Gov. McGreevey said he would sign the legislation.

The bill provides for hospital-visitation and decision-making rights, an inheritance-tax exemption and a state income-tax deduction for dependents.

The measure also provides partners of state employees with health insurance and pension coverage and would outlaw discrimination against domestic partners.

So same sex "partners" are recognized on the basis of what? Do two guys or two women just show up and say, "Give us our benefits, we're partners!"?

Wonder to yourself. If you think you can get me to reveal my sexual orientation by "accusing" me of being gay, you're clearly missing the point, because it's not a "charge" one should have to "defend" against.

As I've said before, I have too many homosexual friends and relatives to be unaware of the difficulties they face. I contribute to P-FLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), and I march with P-FLAG at demonstrations.

As for me, I have no interest in whatever sexual practices you or anybody else may fantasize (or practice) indulging in. That's what private life is: private.

That's one step in the right direction, I think. Hopefully more states will follow New Jersey's decision.
