Have the schools gone too far?

Bright and early this morning there was a bank robbery in my community. I was at school when this happened. About 20 minutes after school started we were put into Lock Down mode because of this bank robery. Now this bank that was robbed is 15 miles from where the school is. We sat in the corner of the class room with all the desks around us and the lights off for an hour. First we had no idea what was going on. Then about a half hour into they told us what it was about.

Do you think it is a little over the top to be locking down a school for a bank robbery that happened 15 miles from the school? I personally found it quite odd that we had been locked down. What do you all think?

yeah, that was way overboard. i remember right after columbine my high school setup this thing where the teachers always locked their doors when the bell rang and for a student to get into the class they had to show the teacher (through the window in the door) a signed hall pass. it's all just crazy paranoia

That sounds a little extreme. It is good to secure the school by locking the doors, but I would think posting lookouts would be enough to ensure the school's safety. Putting the students in the corner sounds bit over the top. Better safe than sorry, I guess. A school would be a decent place for an armed robber to hole-up and take hostages to negotiate an escape. 15 miles isn't that far when it comes to someone with a getaway car. The chances would be 1 in ... well a bunch.

it may be a little extreme
</devils advocate> but if something happened say like the automatic and body armor shoot out in CA a while back they everyone would be dragging the schools into court for not acting and protecting the students...

you really can not have it both ways...........

when it comes to these things i always hate when they dont tell you what is going on they should always tell you (now i know some people

I vote for: this was rediculously extreme.

First off you and your kids should not live in a constant state of fear. I would say the mental trauma of this kind of stuff will lead to MSD multiple stress disorder or some crap.

the proper course of action might have been to lock outside entrances and post guards using all those secretaries and administrators who do nothing all day. Quietly inform teachers and be ready for more drastic action if required.

What if the last reported sighting of the robber was in the vicinity of the school??? If it was an armed robber, would any teacher volunteer to be an unarmed lookout or guard???

Not enough info to make a decision on whether is was over board or not.

Vollunteer?

No you tell them to do it.

We are not talking about standing in the street here.

We are talking about monitoring a closed and locked door.

besides if you are afraid of them breaking through those steel doors on the outside of the building what is going to stop them from entering the classrooms inferior door with your kids all circled by desks like a wagon train.

It's obvious that you don't live in Los Angeles, the bank robbery capital of the United States.

School administrators are damned if they do. Damned if they don't. Suppose the robber was now on foot during a chase and the area of the chase is in the line of fire of the school?

If you live in a sparsely populated area, a bullet could travel quite far!

What steel doors????

All the schools I went to, and the 2 schools my kids go to, all have glass doors. Also, all classrooms have a wall of windows, no problem for stray bullets! (Note -- circled by desks . . . . . provide protection from glass from windows being shattered by bullets maybe??)

How many teachers are going to follow your orders to stand behind a locked glass door and play lookout for an armed robber???

Like I said, not enough info to base an opinion.
