GWB has lied and lied and the press doesn't annihilate him. For example, GWB said that the tax cuts benefited mostly the middle class. They didn't, they were conclusively tipped to the wealthy. GWB said that he wouldn't leave problems to future generations; yet he will be leaving enormous additional debt and possibly war to future generations. GWB says that his environmental policies improve cleanliness of the water and air. Yet, his policies relax past regulation and make it easier for polluters to pollute. GWB said that his "no child left behind" education bill improves education. However, it provides little funding. The administration has repeatedly resisted efforts by Democrats to provide adequate funding.
Moreover, the press didn't annihilate Bush in 2000 anything close to the way the press hangs on every word Dean says. In 2000, GWB said the Texas tax cut went vastly to the lower income groups. The reality was that only 16% of that group got the tax cut. The press let him slide.
As far as reversing course, GWB takes the cake. In 2000, he was firmly opposed to nation building. Hmmm, you'd never know that today. He was supposed to be fiscally conservative. Now, he would be called a runaway spender.
