The KC-130 is a very durable craft, a pal of mine was radio operator on one. I have pics of it in the Phillipines when the Volcano erupted and destroyed all the planes at the base.
On the crash today, I heard on the radio that FIRE was reported trailing the craft.
I hope it was not enemy fire in Pakistan, to the families it don't matter how it happened, loved ones are gone.
Hopefully it was mechanical.
I don't want to see an expansion of this war.

i doubt that pakistan is resposible for this
but it´s not impossible however i do not think that they would have shot it down if they knew it was a US aircraft
Remeber that relations between india and pakistan is tence
and they might have thought it was an indian aircraft

WOODRUFF: we know that early on in the war there was at least one incident of hostile fire there in Pakistan. But is the sense now that it is unlikely that this could have been the result of hostile fire because of where it happened ?
MINTIER: Well, it's really going to be difficult to say until the investigation is completed. But according to the people in the Pentagon, the early word is no enemy fire was detected. [The officials say] that the plane was on fire before it crashed into the mountainside which is, any time you fly, always a danger and difficulty with that much fuel in the air and that this was a refueling aircraft -- additional danger in the air not just at the time of an accident. http://www.cnn.com/2002/WORLD/asiapc...tsc/index.html |

In a way, it's too bad that the majority of our losses have been due to errors on our side, instead of enemy fire....then again, it's much better to have that than the enemy getting kills.

I wouldn't say it's likely attrition due to training errors in this case, Hoggy. Mechanical probs or hostile fire maybe, but I'm biased in this case. This isn't a V-22 Osprey exercise(hmmm..). USMC aviation pushes the envelope in peacetime training or war and it's the price paid for being Avant' Garde, the tip of the spear, and being a devil-dog in the United States Marine Corps. Too late to join the best and Claim the Title, hoggie? -jk-

At this point, we can only guess the cause of this terrible accident.
Remember the Gulf War. After the ceasefire it was disclosed that the death rate of US Soldiers was LESS than in peace.
This was due to a "captive" audience if you will and the lack of alcohol and driving, the leading cause of death of our servicemen.
Training accidents lead to numerous deaths also, we had great luck/training/guidance/Heavenly Protection whatever you think, whatever the source ,, the total toll in the Persion Gulf war was very small..
Not to minimize the loss of life in any way, the families of the veterans killed are damaged, just there were less grieving families than we anticipated.
Remember SoDam Insane's statement " The Desert will run Red with the Bood of Amercian Soldiers "
He was WRONG, thankfully.
also wrong were the persons in charge of the body bag supply, gratefully almost all of them came home empty.
