Had a "friend" last night tell me his friend had been doing this---

Purchase a new Radeon 9800 Pro or XT (approx 500$) from Fry's Electronics, take it home and remove the bundle from the box, stuff a folded magazine into the box to represent the weight removed and use a common machine to re-shrinkwrap it in plastic so it appears as if it hasnt been opened---then return it for a full refund keeping the videocard, the box being returned to stock for the next person to purchase---can you imagine that???

He said it worked so well they did it at every Fry's nearby (there are 5 equidistance from me)

I got pissed off---first thinking about purchasing a magazine loaded box and trying to explain it at the return desk, then, the loss the store incurs and ultimately passes on to you and I the routine Fry's shopper---

I might also add I was offered one of these cards brand new for 200$ if I wanted it---they think they are "getting Fry's back" for past indifferences, I think they are just plain and simply committing multiple commercial burglarys and are thieves that I dont want to know---

Im contemplating mentioning it to Fry's, im sure they must know by now tho...

That is theft just as surely as if they'd shoplifted it. Unfortunately the friend-of-a-friend bit makes it hearsay and the cops may not listen to you. Still, you should at least talk the police or the folks at Fry's and see if they'll listen.

Give the name and a description to Fry's. Maybe a picture if you can get one. Just the name should be enough if he tries to return something.

I agree with everyone else whats been said, Report it at least to frys then that way they will know if a person under that name returned something they can check the box first by breaking the seal. Fry's has thier own shirnk wrapper machine so it will be no biggie for them to open it up and rewrap it.

That is downright low of your "friend" and that sounds like its gonna be past tense pretty soon.

Thieves are thieves the world over. This individual is just in the learning stage. He/she may go on to be a leader in the scamming business. If it were I, I would not hesitate to turn him/her in.. you might just help save a life somewhere down the road.

Don't you have to put some personal info on the receipt when you exchange/return an item. You have to at least sign it, don't you?

I let Fry's security chief know about it alittle while ago---what I couldnt believe was they hadnt heard of this yet and was blown away by what I told him---didnt ask many questions, said he would let ALL stores know about this happening asap tho, and of course thanked me...
